I use a small piece of dynamite. The fish floats on the surface for a while that gives me time to scoop it up. ......kidding :).

I personally think using tap water is your problem. Also, please cycle your tank before adding the fish. No miracle product makes it safe to add fish right away.

use a controller to turn off/on your heater and the heater settings as a backup.
Set the heater to turn off 3-5 deg higher than the controller settings. Never rely on the heater markings, but use a reliable thermometer.

I am trying to nurture back a birdsnest coral from a tiny spec. It has been doing OK so far, but there is something growing around it that seems to suffocate it. I need help identifying what it is.
There seem to be at least two problems. One, grows on the base of the coral and the rock it is...
Test your nitrates and phosphates and post. If everything said above fails and your nitrates and phosphates are close to zero, you can dose some potassium nitrate in small quantities. You want your nitrates slightly above phosphates.

I have had a successful 30 gal reef for several years now and wanted to start a 5 gal as an experiment. Long story short, I failed. Good luck.
Be very careful with the laser. Do you have protective equipment like goggles? Lasers like that will blind you faster than you can blink. You will probably blind the fish too.
I know how bad it sounds, but your best bet is to remove the rock and scrub it off.
2.5" bed works for me. I don't have any borrowers or send sifters other than worms etc. No experience with other depths either. The tank has been set up like that for close to 2 years now.
I use an Alkalinity tester with liquid reagent (older ones used powder). It works great for me. The results are very consistent. The reagent does not last for too many measurements, but I get a fresh one ones it's gone and it comes with a new syringe and an adapter. $8 for a reagent is not bad...
