Quick, related question:
I have a 72 Gal FW tank and am thinking about starting a small nano SW tank - probably 12 gallons. I fishless cycled my FW tank using Ammonia (your basic bottle from the grocery store ). Can I do the same with SW or do I have to toss in the old cocktail shrimp...
Depends on the cichlids. I have many different dwarf cichlids in my 72 gallon planted tank and they don't bother the plants at all.
Other cichlids - putting plants in would be like adding an all you can eat salad bar to your tank
So it really depends on what cichlids you plan to keep
Not a lot you need to do to them. I bought a whole one at Wal-mart - sawed it in half, emptied the coconut milk and scooped ot the fleshy meat and cut a small hole for an entranceway.
I can't recall if I boiled mine or not - I may have as I was boiling a lot of things - but not sure its...
Well Childawg - I had a debate a month or so ago with a few folks here who were very rigid in applying this guideline. I argued they were wrong then - glad to see the articles you mention above
Hey Z-Man - do you know Eric's buddy Al Y. who is the source of some of his dwarfs? I met Al a few months ago - turns out we live in the same school district. Al is a really great guy.
Yep, I agree with the prevailing sentiment here. in fact, just cleaned some petrified wood rocks and a piece of driftwood with some anubias plants in a 19:1 dip yesterday to take care of some dreaded BBA
All I can give you is my experience - using the AH Supply reflector and 110W CFs over my 72 gallon. Most people would say thats only 1.6 wpg or low light - but I have grown moderate light plants with no problems at all - and even tried a few high light ones - which haven't died but haven't...
Yea Kveeti - my first water sprites I planted in the substrate - and while a couple did ok, most did not. But from the pieces came the babies which I left floating. Now I have 2 huge plants in the substrate and a ton of floating sprite. In fact, it grows so fast for me I am usually selling...
OK, I am curious - what is the rational of dosing to obtain 20ppm versus dosing according to the instructions on Flourish Potassium's bottle which says dose 1 mL for every 40 liters (10 gallons) 2x/3x or as needed?
OK, I will not recommend either. Instead, the quietest pump I have ever owned is a German made SCHEGO.
Extremely quiet. Most places do not sell them so they are not well known. You can get them online here:
