    new reef

Hi everybody, I haven't made an appearance for quite a while, my internet has been down most of the time. A couple of rival internet companies had some sort of little war and they messed up the airwaves-thats what our internet provider said. Anyway, I haven't mentioned my 90 gallon aquarium-...

    Nitrates

Regular partial water changes seem to be what most people recommend for controlling nitrate. It seems like the general rule is about a ten percent water change once a week, so that's what I do and it works pretty good. I got my 90 gallon FOWLR tank from someone in town who had had it a year...

How do I re-arrange my live rock?

It's funny this topic came up now, I just rearranged the live rock in my 90 gallon tank last night. 'Course all I have for sessile inverts is two curly cue anemones and a few shrooms. I just took all the rocks out and set them out on the floor so I could start over, because it's too hard to...

    Acropora Question....

Right, I have a small acropora colony that I bought from GARF. I have VHO and power compact lights on my aquarium, and it has only grown .5 inches in six months. I hope to see it take off when I get a metal halide lamp this spring.

    Reef Resources

Search engines work well. I've learned a ton of things by simply searching on google or yahoo for reef keeping information. Here are a few good sites as well: http://www.peteducation.com/index.cfm?cls=16 http://saltaquarium.about.com/

    Acropora Question....

Sure, acropora loves intense light. It also requires strong water current and high calcium levels. The calcium concentration in the water should be 425 to 450 ppm. It's also easy to propogate by fragmentation when it is healthy. I think acropora is one of the most beautiful sps corals, right...

    Lighting Concern

Yep, for those host anemones I would go with some more powerful lights. I still wonder about the manner in which they died though. It seems unusual that they would perish so fast. By the way, condylactus anemones aren't good for reef tanks because they tend to move around and usually don't...

    Pet Aiptasia

Hey, thanks. I just might go for it, if I can find room for another tank.

    Pet Aiptasia

Hey, this might sound dumb, but could I keep an aiptasia in a one gallon tank with a chunk of LR and a little pump and an 18 watt pc light? Feed it generously, lavish it with TLC that kind of thing? If it was the only critter in the tank would this work? I feel bad about shoving a sharp...

Ideas for stocking my first SW tank

I wholeheartedly agree with oscar83. That protein skimmer SUCKS! At the very least get a prizm or a seaclone. I know, before someone bites off my head, lots of people hate the seaclone. I think it's fine, and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. It's not the best in the west, it's cheap, but...

    new peacock

Some kinds are dangerous to the human hand, yes. There are some species of mantis shrimp that are nicknamed "thumb splitters". A few of the larger species also have the ability to break aquarium glass. Two different killing methods are used by mantises. Some are strikers, and will bash snail...

    Greetings from Zog

[/IMG] This is what kind of shroom I have in my FOWLR. I did not take this picture. It is from http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=668 And yes Corriewf, I have. Here it is. [/IMG]

    Tank Upadate

    It's twenty nine gallons.

    Lighting Concern

What kind of anemones? I don't think you have enough light for some of the higher light requiring anemones. But that still wouldn't cause them to pass away over night, it usually takes months for them to waste away. Three and a half watts per gallon really won't do for long tentacles, seabaes...

    Greetings from Zog

By the way, since your tank's only forty gallons, I wouldn't put another clown in. Maroons get kind of big, and I don't think the perculas would be too thrilled about that.

    Greetings from Zog

I don't think that the smoothe mushrooms are very hard at all. I bought this tank used and it has a bit of a nitrate problem that I'm still working on, but the shrooms are doing fine. In fact, they are reproducing. I only have 1.8 watts per gallon of light on the tank too. Two wal-mart...

    Greetings from Zog

Hi everybody. I've never tried this section of the forum before, but it looks like it could be useful. I have a 90 gallon salt water tank and a 29 gallon reef tank. Here's the fish only tank.[/IMG] You can see the reef in the reflection in the upper left. My fish tank has a maroon clown...

    Tank Upadate

[/IMG] Hi everyone. I thought I'd post a new picture of my reef tank because I rearranged it. I also took some advice one of you gave me and put a fire fish in it. Of course, the fire fish is hiding in the picture. It wouldn't come out during the photo shoot.

    Rose Anemone Question

I would feed it once a week with a small peice of shrimp or fish. It might also eat plankton when you feed your coral.

    lights

I only have 6.4 watts per gallon on my tank. I use a 2 x 74 watt VHO retrofit kit from Hamilton Lighting and a weird little 36 watt power compact light that has been discontinued. My soft corals do great with this much light. I used to be overrun with tree corals before I gave most of them...
