47g Column Project - Tank Journal

thanks greech, your 40br was always an inspiration for me. My biggest mistake imo was removing the skimmer. At least if I had left that on I could've removed some of the dissolved organics but with irregular water changes, no skimmer, and several snail deaths I believe it gave the little bit...

    New Pick-ups!

Just wanted to share my latest pickups, one Odoe pike and two Delhezis. I've wanted these guys for a long time and now that the 180g is set-up I couldn't wait any longer. The Odoe has already been weaned onto shrimp and krill while the bichirs are eating bloodworms and Hikari carnivore. The...

47g Column Project - Tank Journal

Well, things have gone a bit downhill. I'm sad to report that in January my BSJF escaped the tank and died (I will never trust eggcrate again!). Seeing my favorite SW fish dried up on the floor after less than a month was extremely disheartening. Over the next few weeks I lost several zoa polyps...

47g Column Project - Tank Journal

Well he was busy last night - not constructing the narrow burrow I expected, but instead excavating the entire front of the rock structure. I'm so glad I built the rock column on the glass instead of the sand.... It looks a bit ugly and the water is cloudy from all the sand being...

47g Column Project - Tank Journal

thanks guys. I've got a big Christmas update for everyone... Thursday we went to my favorite LFS to pickup a few things and of course had to see if they'd gotten any new livestock in. Ended up seeing a zoa frag ('casino chip' zoas according to the manager, but I'm not up on my names) that I...

    Please Help Identify This

I'd guess its a pineapple sponge like I have (though yours seems a bit yellow so it may be different)... Good filter feeder, and nothing to worry about. If it starts to spread like crazy you can scrape/scrub it off the rock.

    FIRST SW TANK JOURNAL

I'd have to look more into the cactus coral since I'm not familiar with them, but Dendrophyllia are Non-photosynthetic corals, which means they require frequent target feeding to each polyp throughout the day - not impossible to keep, but certainly not beginner friendly and even experts still...

    FIRST SW TANK JOURNAL

Awesome, congrats on the project! Be prepared to get addicted quick :D Stocking is pretty much a personal decision so its hard to make general suggestions. I'd stay away from sponges for awhile though, they can be difficult to keep well. For corals look into zoanthids, palythoas, star polyps...

47g Column Project - Tank Journal

Thanks! Yup, I have a roughly 5" DSB in the tank. Since this is my first SW tank and its had the DSB from the start I don't really have any thing to compare it to, but so far so good. Things have been very stable (knock on wood) and nitrate is consistantly 0, so I guess its doing its job :D...

47g Column Project - Tank Journal

Not the best pic since it was the middle of the night, but I caught one of my nerite snails trying to escape the other night... I knew jawfish were escape artists, but I didn't suspect the snails :D
