I had upgraded the lighting for my 29 gallon tank a year and a hlaf ago. I have loved the kit and the light. I have no idea where I bought it and I need a replacement bulb. It is a U-shaped bulb that fits into the stock housing and is 21" long. It has 4 round pins in a line and is labled...
I am new to reef aquariums but I have freshwater experience. My background is in the microbiology of food production and sanitation. Can anyone recommend some books on the chemistry and ecology of the reef aquarium?
The only salt water book I have is Captive Seawater Fishes by Stephen Spotte.
Or prune too much. I lost a fish last month because I pruned half of the biomas from my tank and did not think that it would casue a ammonia/nitrite spike. I had not measured any Ammonia/Nitrite/Nitrate in months. I pruned and the next morning all the fish were acting funny. Out came the test...
If you stop gravel vacuuming then you should watch for H2S pockets in the substrate. Just take a chop stick and poke a bunch of holes in the substrate every once in a while. If any places go anearobic bacteria can grow that make H2S and that is a poisonous gas.
I don't gravel vac and my...
The best reason to measure pH is to watch for a crash. If your pH is falling a little each week for months you are likely burning through your kH buffer and you would want to fix that before you are in the low 6s. With plants it should not be a problem as they love ammonia as a fertilizer.
It is very important to keep the strips dry. No humidity or anything. Then I find them to be great. I still use an API kit unless i am testing twice a day for some reason.
My other hobby is making holograms.

I use silver halide and dichromate bleaches a lot. My day job is as Master Brewer at Downtown Joe's in Napa, CA and I have to measure Na, Cl, Mg, Ca and CO3 daily.

When I built my two aquariums at the end of last year I just wanted some fish for my two year old. Once I discovered how fun and easy plants are I have both tanks heavily planted and low tech. I can not imagine a tank without them now. They are not only beautiful but are very good for the water...
If you ever end up with a kit to test chloride, that is the only one I worry about. All the others AI just send down the drain. I recycle silver and chromates so I put used chloride tests in my silver reclamation jar as they have silver nitrate.
I have platies and not guppies. I would keep 3 in a ten gallon tank and no more. I keep more than 30 fish in my ten gallon but they are quite small. They all don't weigh as much as 2 platies.
