    unidentified critter

From your description, it sounds like it could be a lettuce nudibrach, which is not actually a true nudi, but a sea slug. That's a great hitchhiker if that's what you've got. They're herbivorous (do a great job on bryopsis) and photosynthetic (how cool is that? a photosynthetic slug!). They...

Exactly what lighting do you have? NO? PC? And how many total watts?

    little white specks every where

If the little white guys move and are practically microscopic, then they are likely copepods and are beneficial. If they're larger, coiled, and calcerous -they're probably the afore mentioned tube worms. Neither one will harm anything and are both a good sign of a maturing system. If they're...

    *LOOK* Reef documentaries on TV

Agreed, the whole series is fantastic. The reef one is my fave, but I'm biased :D I love the time lapse growth shots and the computer generated journey into the gut of a polyp. I wish more documentaries would focus on corals and their behaviors/anatomies. Most deal primarily with fish and...

    toadstool question

The yellow toadstools are one of the toughest to keep. While it's not abnormal for it to retract and shed, it could be a sign of inadequate conditions (usually an inferior water flow issue IME) or it could be nothing at all and just part of it's normal cycle. Now it's been traumatized by...

    *LOOK* Reef documentaries on TV

Hi there friends and neighbors. Saw this on another site and thought y'all would dig it too. The first one is on TONIGHT. It's the reef episode from the Blue Planet series. If you haven't seen it, you've got to. Far and away the best documentary on coral reefs I've ever seen. Her ya go...

    DSB and Nitrates

At six weeks, your tank is still a baby. It'll take some time for anaerobic conditions to establish themselves, and for a bacterial population to reach a level where you'll see denitrification. You are using fine grade sand right? If so, it'll come. Keep up on the water changes until your...

    After five years

I have a bunch of those mini-stars that wave tentacles from within the rock too. Never see them out in the open. Haven't seen the trippy light-up ones you have though. Let me know if you ever get an ID on them.

    After five years

The spider worm (lol) sounds like a vermatid gastropod. It's basically a sessile snail, not a worm at all. Very cool things, although they can bother corals with their webs if they're in a bad spot. The price for that identification, BTW, will be one of your funky bioluminescent stars :D...

    Can anyone help with ID

Do they move? It should be pretty easy to tell if they're little snails. Sounds like they could be tiny little fanworms to me. They look like coiled worms. Can you see tiny filter feeding feathers coming out one end?

    My New Saltwater Aquarium

First, turn off the caps lock  What fish do you currently have in there? What size system and how much light exactly?

    Cyanobateria

Not so much the cyano itself, but the underlying cause is. Post some specs and maybe we can help you out.

    I don't get it (Damsels)

Dude, three fish in a 5g tank is a far cry from plenty of room. Territoriality aside, it's a virtual certainty that you're going to run into water quality problems here. I'm a nanohead myself, and I've yet to see a successful, long-term 5g tank with more than one teeny fish. Can I assume...

    Mangroves

Mangroves are cool, but you'll have to set up a rather specific in-line system to keep them. Also, they're slow-growing, so their effectiveness as a nitrate reducer is a bit overblown. For denitrification, you'd be much better off setting up a refugium with various macroalgaes IMO.

what is the smalllest sait water tank

No such thing as too small, but it gets more and more difficult the smaller you go. Check this out: http://reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=21015 You'll have to register to view the pics. Antoher guy I know has a "shotquarium." It's a shot glass with some LS and a mushroom. A little...

    Iodine

I wouldn't if I were you. Iodine is tricky and if overdosed can be a huge problem. I assume you're looking to add it for the benefit of your new shrimp, but they'll be fine without. You should have no problem maintaining iodine levels with just water changes. It's a trace element, and not...

    Skimmer/filter usage

hmm. Maybe the stopper is a way to regulate the flow of air? Hopefully someone else who's used one comes through and can give you a definitive answer. As for oxygenation, I wouldn't worry about that. The contact time with air bubbles in your skimmer's reaction chamber plus the surface...

    Skimmer/filter usage

I'm not really familiar with the skilter, but that tube sounds like the venturi for the skimmer. Without the air, you're not skimming. The noise sounds about right. I've heard the skilters are very loud.

    Food for Skunk Shrimp

Mine eat anything. Right out of my hand no less. Their favorite seems to be shrimp pellets, which I find quite ironic.
