Caring for Gymnos is a pretty much the same for all species. I have wild caught Gymnos from all over Uruguay and I keep mine in hard water with a high pH. Others who I have collected with have theirs in slightly acidic pH and soft water so they are very adaptable to whatever water conditions you...
I really want to get a pond or two going cuz my gymnogeophagus would love it! If you have extra space I'd get a group of gymnos and they should spawn for you.
Orange Heads would be a good choice. $50 for 12 is a steal of a price if you want them http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fwcichlids&1359086578
I disagree, they are all labeled correctly. Checkout this thread and you can see the progression of a juvenile A. heckelii to a subadult: http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=15755&sid=72ad2116bc5117abfee96f30e4fcd273
A 75g tank will be fine for a Heros sp. Rotkeil. I'd worry about the smaller tankmates. Kuhli loaches look like worms and might be eaten. Corys will be fine and I'd stick to tetras/barbs that have a deeper body. Though they aren't SA I've been thinking about adding Rainbow fish to my SA setup...
The 10g will work until you move for raising all the fry together. After you move I'd move them to a bigger tank, like 20-30g. Just keep up on your water changes and there should be nothing to worry about
Males will have worming on their faces while females won't. Here's an old photo of my pair when they were about the age of yours, male on the right female on the left.
The one pictured is male. Heros sp. "Rotkeil" are awesome fish! I have a breeding pair and they are usually the first fish people see and they are always stunned by them. They definitely do better in bigger tanks so your 75g would be ideal. There isn't anything too special with care for them...
The caudal fin is what screws it up for me. G. abalios' caudal fin has a mix of spots and stripes while your photos only show spots. Also G. altifrons has a tiny lateral spot of 4 scales or smaller.
Right now I'm leaning towards Geophagus sp. Tapajos II. These are a different fish from G. sp...
How big are these fish? Also did they have a name on the label? I don't see any black bars under the eyes but do they have any?
I'm baffled at the moment but hopefully we can figure it out.
In terms of fancy plecos I'd say get one you like the looks of and then see what its requirements are to see if they'll match your tank mates. Personally I've had great luck with Green Phantoms (L200s) but my bushy noses are great too. Just realize with plecos you get a lot of poop!
Don't worry he'll come around, just a little stressed out from the move. I'd try some bloodworms to treat him and he'll start to get super stoked to see you!
I'd bump up your filtration if you have the money. Personally I'd get a canister filter in addition but if that is too much another HOB.
For Geos there are a bunch to choose from. Some of the easiest to find would be G. abalios or G. altifrons. What is your pH and hardness like? Some species...
Since you did just get the ram I wouldn't be too concerned that it hasn't eaten yet. It is just getting used to its environment and could take a couple more days till it is comfortable to start eating. Trying defrosting the blood worms in a cup with tank water and then pour the worms over the...
