I am starting a 72 gallon reef, planning on having clams and much more light demanding specimens. I was planning on using 2 250w, but i found a 1000w i could get for the same price. Is there such thing as too much lighting? if i were to get the 1000w what bulb? and would i need any actinics?

There is such a thing as too much light.

For example, that 1k halide would probably raise your electricity bill substantially.

But on the flip side, you could get a nice big parabolic hood for it and grow tomatoes all around the tank. ;)

electricity is a huge issue there my 175w brings up the bill about $4 so u can imagine that u would be looking at about $30-40 more a month for something like that. some corals that would be to much for but if the tank is deep that would make up for it. if it was me i would do 2 250s just so it would be less monthly cost and more even light.

IME, MH's are fine at 250w at 24" deep tanks. More than 24" like 31" and I would say 400w.

For a 72g I would say 2 250w without actinic is fine. If the lamp has actinic and moon lights that is fine too.

Best spectrum bulbs are 12K.
