I am buying a used 55 gallon and a filter because I am on a low budget for this tank. I am making the stand and a background like this guys out of styrofoam http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=108995. I am using pool filter sand to cut the cost of gravel. My only problems is rocks/caves. So I have two questions, how I know if the pool filter sand is safe to use and does anyone know where i can get rocks cheap or how i could make artificial caves and rocks?

Craig's List for the rocks.

For the sand, make sure it doesn't have algecides in it. Wash it out first.

well, for me i went hiking along the lockport canal and found some really awesome rocks! i tested them before aquarium use and they're cool. one is jet black with red swirls- its as light as a feather out of water but quickly fills up with water making it heavy.

my LFS stocked slate for a while, but recently got rid of it. I've seen landscaping companies recommended for getting slate and other rocks.

I don't have a lot of rocks in my tanks, but I do have a few...the ones I do have, I got from the creek behind my house. I just washed them off with some bleach.

Best place for rocks I found was at a local landscape plant nursery. They had all kinds, weathered slate type, round smooth river rock and even the orange-white veined stuff. Seems like it was around $.40 a pound.

Most my rock and stone come from landscape places or gravel yards.
