How many african cichlids can you fit in a 55 gallon tank?

Well see i'm new to cichlids so i need alot of help learning about them. I know there are like 12,000 different kinds. so any reccomendations and pointers would help... thx
We like whats in my sig. the Gouramis were rescued and shouldn't be in there, but no problems yet.....

With good filtration, and the right compatability, you can overstock a cichlid tank, due to the reduced aggression from the fish.
