Ok, let's start off by saying that I know RO/DI water would be best to put in my tank.

My question is, would it be ok to use regular tap water until I have enough money to buy a RO/DI machine or would it be better to just hold off on setting my tank up until I can get one? Keep in mind that no fish would be added until I could get the RO/DI machine so algae would be my main concern, right?

tap water should be fine until then, so long as it is conditioned with something like prime :)
but im sure you already knew that

As said above, there are other harmful elements as well, like copper, for example, that once in your tank, will not be able to get out. For just the cycle alone, you could get away with using tap water ... but I'd highly recommend testing the water and see how it checks out before you use it.

Cheers!
