which heater to get and what size?

I would suggest 2 150-200 watt heaters. 2 heaters are safer especially living in a cold place like that.
Jager heaters are pretty solid.

I'd go with (2) 200 watt heaters. Your area is beautiful this time of year by the way. Too cold for me in the winter though, been there done that.

I only want one heater, since the ranco is single stage (only can hook one item up to it), it will prevent the heater from getting stuck in the on position, so there really isnt a need to have two lesser wattage heaters to prevent over heating. So I should get a 400 watt heater or would 300 do?
The reason for two heaters is so that you have a backup if one goes out. It happens...my tank had a wee crash this last weekend due to heater. If you still prefer one instead of 2 I'd get the 400w. But psst I'd still suggest (2) 200 watts instead.
LOL Grins you should come to ND... Cold is the national past time in the winter.. -65 degrees F with the Wind Chill on the really bad days. only -20 to -30 without the wind chill..
Also I like these heaters, they aren't glass, they atomatically turn off if not in water.. Never had a problem with the ones I have, ones I've had for three years.

I'm going to have to get 2 new ones for my display. After the episode this last weekend I need to replace what I had. My salt mixing bin needs it's heater back too.

If it makes you feel any better when I was in Military Training (late 80's) in SC I about cooked to death.. And the humidity about killed my lungs. It was like breathing in water.
