I read on a forum, with regards to hippo tangs, that the captive reared fish seem to be more resiliant to aquiring ich than wild caught. Anyone have any experience with this?

Yes, for the most part I'd have to agree with that. They were all reared under tank conditions and have less exposure to toxins, parasites etc. Also, it is far better for the environment as larval and young fish in the sea have a very, very low survival rate.
