Can this type of filter still be used for a SW tank? I know they can be used for FW, but Im not sure about SW.

I know some people use canisters, but I think most are either empty or have only liverock rubble in them.

Does that mean they aren't good to use on SW since many people don't use them? I was planning on using this in addition to LR and LS

I run a canister filter on my main tank with mechanical, biological (no, not live rock rubble, GASP!), and chemical. I have the Eheim 2028 (I think?).

I have a fluval 405 on my tank. I run it empty with just the sponges in place. It is excellent for mechanical filtration. It can build up nitrates in the sponges so you should rinse them regularly.

Also, with canister filters. They are sealed with an O ring and when the water passes through, it is stripped of oxygen. Be sure that your water has plenty of aeration.

100 bucks for a 404 or 405 is pretty good. The 405 (new model) runs about 200. The 404's were only about 120 brand new a few years back.

By aeration, I mean that the water is well oxygenated. Plenty of surface agitation will give you this.
