Can you use Laterite substrate for as your substrate, not just a fertilizer?

I think it would make an incredible dust storm in your tank if it didn't have some other substrate on top of it. Mine thoroughly murked up the water even with gravel on top and thorough rinsing, when I redid my tank. LOTS of
powder-fine red particles, though it did eventually settle down.

I think laterite is basically dried, granulated clay, meant to disintegrate over time to release iron and other things to plant roots.
