I have some hair algae on my live rock and sometimes, before I got my new aquaclear 50 powerhead for my 20 gallon I would get some brown algae on the sand bed. Now, I still have some hair/brown algae on top of my coraline algae on my live rock making it look not too good. What are normally the causes of the brown/hair algae? My lighting still is only a 15 watt fluorescent over my 20 gallon high, but I am making a hood and tomorrow it will be done; it will contain: one 15 watt fluorescent 10,000K light, 2 coralife 20 watt 50/50 with DIY reflectors. Now my flow is up to 320 gallons per hour.

Thanks.

Thanks.

Plague algae is usually caused by either high nutrient levels, bad lighting. I presume your fitting new bulbs into the the new lighitng setup for the hood?? If not, how old are the bulbs?

What are your water parameters for nitrate and phosphate?

Yes, into my new hood I will be putting in the 15 watt fluorescent 10,000K tube and also two 20 watt coralife 50/50 bulbs when they come in at the end of this week hopefully. For my water, I don't know about phosphate but my nitrate is around 10. I will go check tomorrow with my LFS what my phosphate may be.

Thanks.
