A photo:

He's very gentle and not too shy for a wild fish (he's not so wild any more - he likes to watch the tv screen when I sit at the desk, hehe, ooh bright light!). Here he carefully takes a pellet from me:

Near the end of this vid he sees his reflection and you can tell, it's what I love about these fish, the fiery eye, their ability to change colours at the drop of a hat etc:

Thanks for looking.

Thanks guys!

Not bad for a wild Rotkeil, at least I don't think so - from several discussions with other keepers of WC Rotters, they aren't the boldest of fish (this will be very different if they are aquarium bred) and often take a long time to become accustomed to their keepers. Taking the pellet like that is a new trick for him but boy he learns fast and I can't get over how gentle he is when he takes it from you very precisely, seemingly careful not to bite. He's very good like that actually, it took a long time for him to recognise me but he even lets me stroke his tail fins. He clearly recognises me over others, I see proof of this when someone new walks up to the tank - he hides, with my mum for example, when she came to visit for the first time he didn't recognise her and hid, but as she spent more time here he edged further and further out. Now when she visits he will swim out to greet her. This process is the same for any person he does not recognise, if that's not a sign of intelligence I don't know what is.

I do love the Rotkeils, awesome fish.
