I recently heard that "red peacocks" that are found in pet stores are hybrids (after purchasing one, of course). Is this true? I can't find any info on them. thanks for the help.

aunocara 'red', aulonocara 'sunburst' etc...they are line bred for colour...not a 'natural' strain i.e. does not occur in the wild, but probably around long enough not to be considered a hybrid in the truest sense of the word if that makes sense. think they originated in germany...very nice fish when coloured up. I have had a couple and found that the intensity of colouration is directly proportion to aggression in the fish, as you might generally expect...they were well able to hold their own against other Peacocks.
