LFS has some sweet looking Tropheus species in. They aren't cheap. $25-$30 per. Doing a peacock/hap/yellow lab (maybe some marleri) tank. They seem really aggressive in the tank at the store against each other. Are they that aggressive in a community tank against other species? What about if they had plenty of room would they be that aggressive?

basically, yes they are seriously aggressive to conspecifics, and you want ideally a colony of 20 - 25 fish in a 75 gallon; any less or any smaller in the tank and there is a good chance they will wipe each other out.

not good community fish generally, even in rift lake tanks (think Frontosa can be kept but bigger tank needed again there)...too aggressive, and their dietary requirements are so specific that they need to be especially carefully fed.

yes they are very expensive.

if they had room ? well, they need two things really; lots of room, and lots of tropheus to spread each other out; sort of like the tiger barbs of the rift lake multiplied by 10.

:iagree:

A dominant male and a dominant female will form and basically terrorize any smaller ones. Thats why it is best to get at least 12-14 of them, preferably more. They should also be added all at once and never add a new individual to the existing colony.

What if you were to just get 1 male in a malawi community tank? that would work right?

I have seen that work, but I wouldn't try it myself because I have also seen that result in very quick deaths amongst the malawis - risky to say the least.
