What is it about them that makes em so much more than your average cichlid?

Depends on the store, last time I saw them at my lfs they were around 7 bucks, for 2.5"-3" fronts.
Geeze, the little bitty ones go for $25 here at petsmart usually much more than that at the local hobbiest stores.

Frontosa gets to be a very big cichild in the end. My Petsmart has it discontinued from $25 to $17.

Supply and demand, mainly. Front's take time to grow to maturity, require a rather large tank, and only produce a small number of eggs each spawn.

toddnbecka has got it. All about supply and demand. You charge just as much as another will pay.

There is a batch of baby fronts at the "Pet World" near me at around 1" for 10.99.

Wild caught frontosas (typically adult specimens) are even more expensive as they're deep water fish and require decompression of a sort while being brought up to the surface in addition to all the costs involved in acquiring wild caughts african cichlids.

The frontosa looks like a little cichlid that will get bullied with out the big hump on its head young and it is over 20 bucks where I am as a juvenille but after a looong time of proper maintenance and good tank size, that fish looks amazing. 80 dollars for grown around where I am.
