and for substrate my plans are to use seachems black flourite as a main substrate, and my plan was to mix in a 55oz. box of pure laterite, now i do not think it would do anything.. will it??

Im a huge fan of the 2L DIY it works really well with a powerhead dispersing it.
Im not familiar with the substrates, sorry, I'd go plain gravel and see how the growth is before you dose a bunch of chems, and youll prolly see very soon theres good fert links on rexgrigg.com about ei dosing (in a nut shell, you really dose then later in the week do WC to dissapate it)

ive heard that DIY co2 is very hit and miss... little things like microscopic leaks and even bacteria stopping yeast from growing eating whatever they do lol

so i think im gonna go with the one from big als that comees with the powerhead for like 25$... only thing is you cant buy replacement "mix" online after it runs out,so ill have to make sure i can buy the stuff at my local big als first..

hob's create alot of top water disturbance and thats bad for co2, the big al's prolly uses a co2 mix of yeast anyhow.

those are just diy co2. not hard and a lot cheaper to do it your own. you can also use your own mix. you dont have to keep buying the packets.
