Bigger is better I'll agree, and I'm not advocating for 5G here, but the shape of the tank would play a huge factor IMO.
For example, a 14"x12"x7" tank is vastly different than a Hex tank, which would be something like 8" high x 8" around or something similar
But I would agree with you, 5G is very small for a 3.5" fish (that poops a lot!)

I have to agree with this. I would use 10 gallons as a minimum and 20 gallons being ideal with lots of plants for hiding.
Once in a bigger tank, as long as the other fish aren't nippy. Also be sure not to get another Gourami or one that looks similar to a gourami. Most Goirami are pretty timid, although I have seen a few go nuts and try to attack anything with fins. I kept a mystery snail with one of my gourami with no problems.
One piece of advise, everyone has an opinion, just take what everyone says with a grain of salt, everyone just wants whats best for the fish.

Gourami psychiatry...
I have two dwarf gouramis in a 20g tank, with too many tank mates...i know, but got it under control right now...and all are happy. However, tho' they entered together a month ago, they hate each other. One spends alot of time under his tree trunk, hanging low under the plants, and occasionally, they chase and butt each other. That hiding one hated me too, but have taken to tapping on the tank just before feeding...gets him out to join the other one, and they eat together just fine.....but their personalities are so different. I guess one has decided to be the BIG DUDE, and the other one is just a street worker...hmmm. So onward, one dominant, the other submissive.
