1 are they very active
A.they are among the more active Polypterids
2 are they aggressive
A Generally speaking no
3 will they devour other fish
A yes small fish like guppies and small tetras can become foods
4 is $25 paying to much
A prices vary widely put it this way if you want it get the price isn't that bad
5 what is the specific water parameters they require.
A Water chemistry
In their natural occuring range West and Central African rivers, lakes and swamps
bichirs are found in water conditions varying in pH values between 6.5 to almost 9.0.
And water hardness varying between2dH to almost 20dH.
And tempuratures ranging from mid 70'sF to mid 80'sF
with a dissolved oxygen content between 3.3 parts per 1000 by volume
and 2.50 parts per 1000 by volume.
3.3 parts per 1000 by volume is common in aqauria kept at 75 F
These water parameters will flucuate thruought the year as dry season gives
way to the rainy season and rivers rise and swamps flood often lowering water temps
for short peroids of time.As you can see they are tolerant of a wide range of water
conditions.
these are escape artisits any opening should be closed off to prevent escape
like all bichirs and yes they are bichirs they need to acess the surface to breathe
so the water level needs to be lowered a cpl inches else it can die -Anne

ps you'll find them amazing fish to keep.Any questions please feel free to ask

mine is pretty active, i see it most of the day just cruising around the tank, and they look very cool when they are swimming.
Back when i started my 55 i have some smaller fish in there like neons and stuff, and i had actually caught the ropefish eating one, and to be honest it was kinda neat to see, almost like a snake.
As far as the money goes here it cost me 14 but if u really want one then 25 doesn't sound too horrible.

Do not mean to hijack the thread, but what are suitable tank mates for them? Can they be kept w/ an oscar?

I have angels, gouramis, teras, upside down catfish and cories with mine. Id be more concerned about the oscar messing with the rope fish than the rope fish messing with the oscar..

jakedc3, you are already overstocked in that tank. i would not be adding any more fish.

I have 2 of these guys and they are some of my favorite fish I've ever had.

1 - yes
2 - not at all, only to tiny fish and shrimp maybe ;)
3 - smaller fish such as guppies, or anything relatively the same size as a pregnant female guppy can become a nice snack
4 - I payed $8 or so bucks for each of mine, but they can be hard to come by depending on where you live

as for living with an oscar, I've read multiple things online about not keeping them with oscars, this video will hopefully encourage you not to as well
