I saw some of these at a local fish store. They call them sleeper gobies and say they grow to 6 inches. The only reference I can find online for these say they get to be more in the lines of 20 inches.

Anyone know what they are then? Maybe mislabled?

That's what got me confused. This fish is obviously freshwater and in the freshwater tanks, but all of the online information was about marine fish. It could be the marbled goby, but again, there is so much conflicting info online it's hard to say.

I was just curious if anyone has kept a fish like this and may know the actual name, as it seems to be misidentified.

Notophthalmus

I put the 'snork' in 'snorkeling'!

Do you have a picture? Did you check the link for D. maculatus above? If it's misidentified, it could be practically anything.

It does look sort of like that. The coloring is very subtle, not bright at all. I didn't know if anyone had run across a similar misnaming before.

Thanks for the help!
