I recently set up a 55g for my GT cichlid. It is lightly planted with Vals,Java ferns, and a couple of unidentified rooted plants. It has black sand substrate.I am thinking about getting a common pleco for it,but I do not want to deal with the hassle of it uprooting plants.
Any thoughts on plecos and plants?

A common pleco will outgrow that 55 in the long run (although it ultimately depends on the exact species) and it will probably not do well with a GT. Cichlids and plecs aren't always a good mix. Not to mention commons are pretty careless when it comes to plants and anything smaller would be toast with the GT. I say no pleco at all.
