I’m a saltwater guy in the process of setting up a 120 freshwater tank. My saltwater tanks have sumps/refugiums with protein skimmers. On the freshwater tank, I plan on running two canister filters with a UV sterilizer. Typical to saltwater tanks, you would have a protein skimmer. I haven’t seen this mentioned with fresh water tanks. Does anyone run a skimmer on their freshwater tank or are the “proteins” important to proper flora in the canisters? Would a protein skimmer on freshwater help with water quality?

Thanks, freshwater newbie

Protein skimmers don't work in freshwater. In saltwater, the bubbles stick better and last longer due to the dissolved chemicals (like NaCl). Ever notice how ocean surf is more "sudsy" than when equivalent freshwater waves break on the shore?

One or two good canister filters should be enough for a 120 gallon freshwater.

They do work on some freshwater set ups but not for the amount of power consumed vs collection amount. By the time you would have accumulated a reasonable amount you will have changed the water at least 3-4 times if not more. Overall, its a waste of money, power, and resources for FW.

I wouldn't worry about the skimmer or UV, with good regular water changes, and a couple of canisters on there, you should be good to go.
