Going to seed the 40

I'm going to be breaking down my 5 gallon and figured I'd use the filter media and some gravel to seed the 40. Should I just stick the filter from the 5 into the filter box of the 40 along with the new filter? The 5 has a bio-wheel as well. Can I somehow use that as well (new filter doesn't use biowheel)? I'm also going to take some gravel and put it in the foot of some pantyhose and stick it in the tank. Any suggestions?
