so, i went to petsmart today to pick up gravel and a filter, maybe. and of course, to look at the fish. my boyfriend and i decided that we'd get the gravel and 5 kuhli loaches, since we didn't think we'd be able to find them again any time soon and we wanted those in our tank. he also wanted to get his platy for our tank. so we waited patiently for the lady in the fish department to finish helping another customer and she asked me what we wanted. i told her i wanted all the kuhli loaches which i believed was 5, but if there were a couple more, we'd take them too. she hesitated, and in a really cocky, know-it-all sort of way, she asked me how big our tank was. i told her it was 60 gallons. then she asked if there were any other fish in the tank. i told her there was one angel and she said, you can't put those loaches with an angel, angels are semi-aggressive fish. i told her that they are actually quite peaceful with bottom dwellers, which those loaches are. then she told me that i was wrong, angels were semi-agressive fish, and that they aren't community fish and should only be kept with other semi-agressive fish. i told her they were kept in community tanks all the time, and that i'd done research and talked to other people with angels, and that i knew what i was talking about. she just looked at me like i was nuts, so i asked her if she would sell me the loaches or not, and she said she couldn't sell them to me knowing i would put them with an angel. then i asked if she'd sell me a platy, and she said the same thing. so i told her i'd take my buissness elsewhere, and stormed out. i actually felt bad for my boyfriend, i was so furious, and i was cursing like a sailor in the truck all the way home. =/ i wanted to tell the manager that they need to educate their staff, but i was so mad i couldn't talk to anybody. i plan on going back eventually because it's the only place i can find kuhlis, and if they give me crap again, i'll take all their brochures off the walls and prove them wrong. i want those fish, and i don't want to have to lie about my stock to get them. ugh, i hate chain employees. what a lovely story though, eh? =P

She isn't actually allowed to refuse a sale. Lots of members have grumbled about not being able to refuse sales to customers, I find it ironic that an uneducated person is actually doing it when helpful people are abiding by the rules and cannot.

If you want those fish, go back and speak with the manager about it. We'll see who gets to be cocky then, eh? ;)

I work in a retail environment...Just ask someone else to get you the fish instead. She simply cannot refuse to sell you the fish. If you want them, and your willing to pay, they have to give you what you want. If they give you some grief this time, ask to speak to the manager on duty, and just tell the manager you want ______ fish, and you were told you couldn't have them. The manager should set the employees straight. I know I do as a manager, but on the other hand, we dont put a flooring specialist in the lumber department. That would be rediculous.

I work for PS and we cannot refuse a fish sale...our only recourse is to write "No Guarantee" on the bag so the cashiers note it on the receipt. If a customer is going to do something stupid with a fish, we still have to sell, we just don't have to honor the 14-day refund deal since the customer has informed us they're putting the fish in an unsafe situation. So go back and give that manager an earful!

Edit* Breela reminded, I forgot about the minor thing since it's never come up. The only animals we can sell an unattended minor are feeders, everything else is off limits.

it was at the petsmart in mishawaka, Indiana, and next time i go back, i'm definitely goin to talk to the manager if they pull that again.

What i found funny, was that when i went to petco to see what selection they had, they had a huge compatibility chart on the wall. Granted, it wasn't super specific, just general categories (loaches, angels, oscars, pond fish, tetras, gouramis, etc.), but it said that angels and loaches could co-exist peacefully, and i was just wishing that they had had one at the petsmart so i could make that woman feel like an idiot.

Oh, i'm terrible.
