They are gorgeous deb! Forgive this newbie question (which I think I may have asked before) but what are the white ones called? I think I am in love with them! How do you keep them from getting peppering in a planted tank?

Thanks guys! Rach -These white ones are called albino royal blues. It seems the strain is inclined to stay on the small side, some of the people I know who purchased them as juvies to add to their "white breeding lines" actually wound up turning around and selling them when they didn't turn out to be a large strain. To me it does not matter.

The albino royal blues have no pigeon blood in their background so they will never pepper up no matter what. You're only going to get peppering in the strains that are pigeon blood based. The heavy peppering you see on my white butterfly male and female did not come from being in a planted tank, but from when they first started spawning. Discus will get darker in color for spawning as their slime coat thickens to get ready for the fry to feed. When this happens in a pigeon blood based fish, dark = peppering. Neither my male nor my female white butterflies had any peppering until then. It is sometimes difficult to get fry to attach to white discus parents since the fry instinctively go for the darkest thing in the tank to attach to for food so you've got to be certain there is nothing dark in a tank with white discus spawns. My LSS will never pepper, the blue cobalts will never pepper, there's no pigeon blood in them, and the red melons must have a tiny bit of pigeon blood since their noses peppered up a little as well as my electric dreams.

For those who want to see a full discus tank shot, I added them to this thread:

There are very few pure white discus strains available. I thought I was going to have white fish when I got the white butterfly male.....well he was white for a while:). Then I had to go shopping again!:)
