SO i've got a fairly established tank that i;ve had some snails in for awhile and now the shells are empty, but i see slugs crawling around on the rock. I'm wondering if it's possible for a snail to leave it's shell and keep on living ot if these slugs are potentially hitchhikers from my live rock???

Snails that leave their shells are not living long. You didn’t mention the type of snail, but some are very touchy when it comes to water quality. Also, do you have a fish that eats snails?

Could your “slug” be a Stomatella Snail? If so, they are good. Do a seach and check out a picture to see if that might be your mystery slug. They are a small snail with only a partial shell.

yeah its a stomatella. got several of them. DANG!! now i gotta see what's up with my snails. Course they were the first things i put in my tank, the lfs store said i needed several of them for a clean up crew. but don't you need something for them to clean up first??? at that time my tank had JUST finished cycling and had no fish, algae, or anything at all. I would imagine that they died just from lack of a food source, huh?

and i don't know what kind they were, some kind of turbo...that was, like THE first livestock i put in my tank, so at that time i was completely at the LFS's mercy...(scary!!!). you would be surprised at how fast you learn by reading these forums regularly. Definately will recommend this site to ANYONE doing anything in an aquarim. Thanks For The Help!!!!

I was originally under the impression that these snails were in the tank for a long time. If they have been added within the last few weeks and are now dead, I think it’s a good possibility that the acclimation (or lack thereof), killed them. Most don’t realize that snails have to be slow-acclimated to your tank. A change in salinity will kill a snail…maybe not that day, but a week or two later. You need to slow drip acclimate snails when you get them. Some say for between 5 – 10 hours.

By the way, turbo’s are excellent algae eaters…and if this is a new tank (within six months), it’s coming!

Best of luck.
