South American cichlids generally prefer water with a lower pH, KH, and GH. The most common types of African cichlids, those from the Rift Lakes, prefer much higher values of all three in their water parameters. In addition, the body language used by cichlids from these two continents is different, thus they may have trouble communicating and avoiding conflict.
So the short answer is that it is really not recommended.
