i was wondering if it would be cheeper to buy a light hood for my 55 gal or to build on myself. all i need is a regular striplight thats enough to illuminate the tank. possibly something fromhome depot thatyou guys know about?

Regular striplights are pretty cheap, but you can certainly save money by DIY. If you want ultra-cheap, you can match ballast, holders and bulbs at McMaster-Carr. Then you just have to come up with a reflector. You could also get a 48" shoplight from Home Depot. Depends on how much you enjoy tinkering, and how comfortable you are with wiring.
