I would like to get some ideas of general thing we all do in keeping FW tanks.

I have been keeping tropical fish for over 30 years and have found a few things that work for me and may not work for others.

I will start it off with a few examples:

We keep our Breeder Pairs of Angels in 10 gallon tanks with great success.

We use Almond leaves to get hard headed Angels and Discus to Spawn

We use Sponge filters to run 90% of our tank filtration

We change 90% of our water in our fry tanks Daily

We use Black plastic ash trays for pleco breeding caves.

We use pot scrubbies in place of bio balls in our central system sump

We make our own fish food

Those are just some examples of things we do that may not work for you .

Please tell us some thing that you do that may not work for us.

Massive fan of UGF and RUGF filters.

Ditto on high flow sponge filters.

Love containerized plants.

Swear by the use of carbon.

Diatom filters are great.

Rarely actually test water.

Hate sand substrate.

My water has 2.0 ammonia straight out of the tap, so my tanks cycle in less than a week, heavily planted, of course :)
I've cycled all my tanks with fish, and never lost one
I totally overstock my tanks (according to many people on here) :D
I too, swear by carbon
I do water changes once a month and add Prime. I vacumn the gravel at the front of the tank every few months.
I test my water every few months.
Any new fish I buy goes straight into my 20 gal for a week so I can keep an eye on it. I don't quarantine in a seperate tank
I don't use ferts or CO2
If I end up with a fish that bullies anyone, I return it to my favorite LFS. I hate bullies :D

Let the flogging begin... :D

I always fish in cycle with out a fatality

I like gravel better then sand but sand is cheaper. After the first month I dont test my water, just do weekly water changes.

Rinse filter under hot water to get rid of crud (running two seperate filters so I only do one filter one month then switch the next)

Always use carbon

I vac atleast twice a week

Dont quarantine a new fish, float the bag then let er rip.

I grow all kinds of plants in less than "1 wpg"

I gladly haul buckets, because for some reason the idea of a python makes me uncomfortable
