 Any ideas on what the heck this guy is?
He was pulled out of a lake in Chester, Nova Scotia.
He is surrounded by little pieces of twigs, and looks like some sort of water dwelling insect inside?

(the video is only fuzzy at the beggining, skip a bit and it gets clearer :) you can see his body later in the video as well)

+1 for caddis fly larvae. They will also use small stones, and even small snails and clams to build their homes from :)

I think Caddisfly Larvae eat algae actually. Whatever they eat- they move really slowly so won't be able to catch most fish- pretty much put whatever debris they find onto their shells. If you put one in with bright coloured toothpicks or mini-gravel they'd probably use that.

Completely harmless... me and my brother used to find them in the brook near our house all the time- tried raising them but they always died.

No idea what the adult fly looks like- could probably google it.

There are a bunch of different kinds. Most eat algae but some are supposed to eat little bugs and stuff. I wouldn't trust them in my tank!

That thing reminds me of playing in the creek when I was a kid. Thanks for helping me remember that, it's nice.
