i just bought a used 55 gallon fish tank, and it has a bunch of mineral deposits on it. what is the best way to clean this up? ive heard chemicals such as CLR or soap can stay behind and hurt the fish.

Oxyclean works great! I sometimes even make a paste out of it to scrub really stubborn deposits.

I can't take credit for the whole Oxyclean thing, Oriongirl has mentioned it many times! It does work really well and rinses easily.

Vinegar

I start with vinegar, then use CLR if necessary. Usually it isn't. Eventually I may use a razor, Oxyclean, or rock salt.

I have the same problem. I had CAKED on algae, bleach did not do anything so I used a razor blade to scrape most of it off which was really tough. Thanks for CLR tip because the outside of the tank has gross mineral deposits. I could try vinegar and oxyclean tho too 'cuz I think I have all 3 in my house. Thanks!
