My measurements may be a bit off, but..
the black tube itself looks about 7"
the skimmer itself adds about 1.5" to it, so it would need about 8.5" to operate
with the control valve fully extended, the entire thing is about 12"

I have one and I loved it until I realized it was skimming my shrimp into my filter. It does a great job cleaning film and floaties off the surface though.
