I've put sphagnum moss in my tank (fire belly toads) but it just got all soggy and brown, and wouldn't grow or attach to anything (I have small pebbles and a little log.) I put some in a dryer area of the tank, but it just sat there and still wouldn't grow. Tips, anyone?

Was it alive when you bought it? If it was the dried up kind that comes in a bag it might be too far gone to bring back to life.

Get rid of the sphagnum moss. It really is not the right moss for most terrariums. You would need a tank where you could provide lots of light but yet keep the air relatively cool and the moss would have to have its feet in moisture, preferably a water system where cool water is running through its root mass. Since you are in Utah you have a couple of excellent mosses that occur in the state, perhaps in your area, near wets spots such as streams or even drainage systems that may prove to be more amendable for your tank. While they would like light they can also handle a drier spot than sphagnum needs. They are easy to grow. Check the link to my journals on them as I do grow two Utah species, one an erect moss and one a prostrate moss. Both are doing great currently. http://s152.photobucket.com/albums/s184/jwcimage/Mosses/Utah%20mosses/
