Hi guys. I'm planning on modifying the ORCA TL-450 and thought I would post a guide of what Im doing as I go incase its of help to anyone. Not sure if there are other guides like this on this forum but I thought I would share my experience anyway.

Heres what Im going to do.

1 - Increase flow from outlet of filter chambers
2 - Increase surface agitation of water
    3 - Replace stock skimmer
4 - Increase water flow in main tank
5 - Modify hood to allow better cooling
    6 - Modify / Add Moonlighting

I'll try to post pics as I go and as much detail as possible. So far I have completed number 4 - the easiest. I have added a koralio nano. (Dont think a pic is needed here)

Up to this point I have ordered the following.
Boyu JAD 308 Skimmer to replace the stock skimmer
Maxijet 600 Pump (not to be confused with the powerhead model)
    Eheim 12mm Flex Pipe
    Hydor Flo

When the parts arrive it will allow me to complete numbers 1, 2 and 3. Number 5 doesnt require any parts (As yet) Just modifications which I will document and number 6 requires parts but this is purely asthetic and will not affect the workings of the tank.

    Will keep everyone posted.

This is the tank at the moment, the day after it was setup so still going through the cycling process.

Addition from above. Picture of koralio Nano just incase.

So here are the parts that arrived this morning. This wil allow me to complete steps 1 and 2 and also to improve 4.

Eheim 12/16mm Pipe, Hydor Flo, MAxiJet600 Pump

The pump I will drop into the 1st Chamber on the left (RED), use the pipe to create a question mark shape inside the chamber portruding from the 2nd hole at the top, and then connect this to the hydor flo.

This will make the throughput of the filter area great, allowing water to pump in and pump out. It will also draw more water through with the 2nd pump.

The hydor flow will create some surface agitation and water movement. Heres what the box says.
"Rotating water deflector applicable, with proper adapters, to the outlet of any pump or filter. Moves the aquarium water increasing oxygenation and surface gas exchange preventing the formation of the "white line" effects.

Just had a thought also, when I can get to my LFS I'm going to add some LR Rubble into the back chamer for filtration but unsure which chamber at the moment. Will keep posted.

So Ive sunk the pump into the chamber and connected the pipe, and pushed it through the 2nd hole

And then used to connectors that came with the hydor to push fit into the pipe and sit snug in the hole

Here is a video of the Hydor in operation. You can see it revolving slowly, with now noise atall create agitation and you can see the flow in the tank. It also creates a shimmering effect throughout the tank when the lighting is on.

Tried to video the shimmer but camera wont pic it up.

    Now thats steps 1, 2 and 4

Next to do will be the improving flo, although when Im looking now and feelin the hood it seems to be ok. I might just try and turn one fan around to blow air in and one to exhaust.

Task 3 Today. Skimmer arrived this morning in post from Hong Kong. 5 Days to the UK, not bad.

    So I've ordered a Boyu WG308 Skimmer w/Pump for a whole 4.80 BRAND NEW!

    Some Technical Bits:
    • Brand: BOYU
    • Model: WG-308
    • Voltage: 220 - 240V
    • Frequency: 50Hz
    • Power: 6W
    • Flow Rate: 120 L/hr
    • Size: 117 x 85 x 260mm
Steps to change the stock skimmer to the Boyu WG308

The Skimmer and contents of the box

    Remove the skimmer outlet pipe

    Pipe off

    Chamber with the stock skimmer

Drop the water level in the tank so it doesnt flow over when you stick your hands in

Now take out the stock filter pump, and the collection cup of the stock skimmer.

You can see in the 4th chamber a small nut at the bottom where the pump press' into. You need to take this nut off to remove the skimmer from chamber 3.

Skimmer removed from the tank and the nut

Drop the new skimmer into chamber 3 and push the collection cup on the top. Use the suckers on the skimmer to secure it to the tank wall. I have positioned it with the outlet facing chamber 2 (towards the heater) to keep the flow direction. Replace water that was removed

    Skimmer in operation

    Thats now steps 1, 2, 3 and 4 Complete.

I have ordered the moonlight strip to complete step 6.

    Hi there,

Im still going with mods, cant get the new skimmer I added to work right, having loads of probs with red algae!! If you PM your postal address, I'll send you my original collection cup, if I can find it if you like. Save you having to wait too long.
