I have five clown loaches (all less than 4 inches) that I want to move through to a 55G. I happen to have an internal filter on hand i.e. the power head and sponge cartridge type. The powerhead part is around 4"x3.5"x3" and is rated at 530 GPH.

This is a lot of flow for this size of tank but don't loaches like flow?

Otherwise I could carefully position it, or load the output a bit?

Try it & see, you should have hiding places so they can get out of the current if they want. Or have the flow hit the front glass & spread out

10 times tank volume per hour should not be to rough for clowns. If it seems the fish are stressing to much I would just put a current break in, with either a rock or a pice of drift wood.
Botines tend to like a little less current than say the hill streams, or riverine loaches. But in my opion it is better to have to much than not enough.
