I have read that actinic lighting is important for marine aquariums.

I am less sure as to what benifit this type of lighting has in a freshwater environment. Could anyone enlighten me (pun intended) as to the benifits to plants and fish with this type of lamp in the lighting canopy mix. I have Discus in a 75 gallon tank.

I have read that the blue spectrum helps intensify the red pigments in plants but some experienced aquarists refute that claim. Try it for yourself, it won't harm the plants for sure.

You can get the same benefit from a 10,000K daylight bulb as far as the blue spectrum is concerned. If you really like the blue then I'd pair up a 50/50 bulb with a 6500K bulb, myself...or just use the actinic as a night light...lol.
