Hi, I just joined & am crazy happy to find other mudskipper keepers! I've done multiple searches on google after getting my first one & only today did it pull up a post from here made this year!

I bought my first mudskipper last month, who has affectionately been named Skipper by one of my buddies :D Yes, I know, very original ;) It's been very entertaining so far. I love how it always has to see what's going on.

Soon I plan on getting a 20gal long to move it into, along with mangroves. Have been going back & forth on sand Vs. mud refugium.

Today I decided to go ahead & grab a second mudskipper from the same store while they were still in stock (doubt the guy is getting anymore, he's had a hard time selling them.) With working on moving to a larger tank, I thought two might be fun to have. I've got a plexie glass divider in case there are issues while getting the new tank done.

So far they don't appear to be having issues, but i'm starting to wonder if I ended up with 2 different species.

I don't know if anyone has guesses on what species they may be?

Are the colors on their fins different when they flare? I was almost going to say that the 2nd one was an african but is not the same color as mine. The first one looks like a vietamese.<sp?>

Thanks! I'll look the page over better when I get off work. I didn't get a good look at the new one's fin colors, but I don't believe there is any blue, I think it's also red or orange & black.

That website was very helpful. I'm certain that I definitely have Periophthalmus species. Granted, I think they all look to same to an extent & without being able to get a good look at the new one's dorsal (neither have blue in their dorsals for sure), i'm thinking both are P. novemradiatus. Which I think would be awesome if it does turn out that they are of the smaller species.

The dorsal fin looks very similar, second photo down:

My bigger skipper:

I guess even though they have different coloring, either species can be found mixed together or there is color variation within species?

Third pic on this page shows two mudskippers together that look about as different from each other as my two look:

I got them at a local pet store, Terrific Pets. Don't know who supplies them.

They've settled in nicely so far. The smaller one has surprising become the dominate one of the two. Haven't seen any aggression since they did a little posturing when I first introduced them.
