50gallon
'coldwater'
3 two inch longear sunfish

I picked up a bunch of duckweed today. I found that my aquaclear 110 was just blowing it around the tank. So, I just swapped my aquaclear 110 that was on my 50gallon with a fluval 304 that was on my 100gallon.
Both full of BB.
both were initially seeded with BB from the 100gallon
As expected some 'filter gunk/material/particles' were released into the tank.
The fish began to cough and rub a little bit.
I did an 'emergency' 50% waterchange and they are still coughing and rubbing. I Observed them for roughly 5mins and in the time period they coughed/rubbed maybe 4 or 5 times.
I am going to rule out the new duckweed as causing the problem because they had no issues until after I swapped filters.
I will do a water test in about 20 or 30 mins.
Any ideas?
Do you think it is just the filter particles bothering them?
