What type of algae do you have? How old is your setup? Planted tank?

What size tank do you have, and what kind of lights? Are you keeping live plants? If so then what kinds?

For starters, how long has the tank been set up? What color is the algae? What are your water readings (Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate)?

Second, algae require light and nutrients, but without knowing more about what kind of algae you have, we cant really give you much help. Is the algae fuzzy? stringy, hair like, like a covering, spotty? that kind of stuff

If he's keeping live plants doesn't really make a difference unless he's going to treat with excel.
