I already have about 90lb of live rock covered in coralline (this is just my display, have another 1lb or so in my refugium to which I'd like to add more). I was hoping to add a little artistic structure to what I have so far, assuming that the coralline will spread.

My idea is to sculp a piece that looks natural with a little bit of 'flare' to top off they rock work and really give it a piece of originality. Not to mention I think it would offer a tad more places for the fish to hide out in.

I want to make it relatively hallow/porus so that it's light enough weight as to not stress the tank itself. Then I planned to fire the clay so that it's hardened.

Has anyone attempted this before? What type of clay would be most suitable? Is there any risk of introducing a clay structure like this to the tank (chemically, etc)? :nilly:

When you say clay, are you talking something you would then fire in a kiln? Do a search and see what you find

What I do know, and you should search this too, is that there are thousands of hits for DIY live rock. Most are based on a concrete mix. I know one is Thorite and Acry 60 mixed with rocksalt. Once cured, you soak the piece to dissolve the rocksalt, leaving voids. There are many formula, all based on hydraulic mixes (mostly Portland cement blends). You can even try the very fast setting “Waterplug tm” type mixes that set up within 3 to 5 minutes.

Good luck.

Aquaroche makes ceramic rock for reef tanks, so I don't see you couldn't as long as you are using the right materials.

Otherwise, there's a small company here in SC called Reef on the Rocks that uses a concrete based formula to make surprisingly porous and lightweight rock. He came to one of our local club meetings last year and gave us a demo on how to make DIY rock. I believe he does custom work, but I'm not certain. It's a wholesale only company, so you'd have to contact them and then place an order through one of the retailers he supplies.
