Peering into my tank the other day I saw some critters going in and out of my moss ball... tiny little white guys that swim like squids. I've had two fish deaths in the past week, cory and a loach. I've been away for a while and my parents wont do water changes whilst I'm away, and my betta has fin rot too. I'm doing 25% water changes every other day, and unfortunately haven't been able to afford a test kit since I cam home... Does anyone know what these things are? They've got three parts to their body, two little bits and a long bit.

Thanks.

hard to tell without pics. Since it's a 10gallon tank a tank swap maybe be the best bet, thats what I would do. Keep up the water changes, if your not swapping a tank do a 50%or more then continue with your 25%. I would not add more to your stock if you parents cannot do water changes for you.

I thought that it could be something like daphnia as I do sometimes feed them with it, but they don't look the same. Really really tiny things...

I'm moving out at the end of this week, betta is going in a jar so I can deal with his finrot, cories are going in a 20gal I've got- hope it'll be in time...

well , little critters that live in moss balls are not parasites.
they prob won't have any affect on the fish in the tank. more likely will be food if the fish find them.

if you have issues in the tank it's not the little critters in the moss ball.

test your water for NH3/NH4 No2 and No3..

Here's a snip from my blog about Critters we find in our tanks and ponds.

This is just a quick blog to be a permanent home to all the links I have to some good sites that already cover this topic very well.

Here's a new link I just got from the AquariaCentral.com forums. It even has lots of pictures. (Thanks jpappy789)

Here's another new link from an AC thread... (Thanks Phosaurus)

These next three very good resources are no longer found with a *normal* internet search as the websites have closed down for various reasons... most likely due to the world economy. Fortunately, the Internet Archive Wayback Machine saves/archives copies of almost all websites so you can still see the original content of the sites. They may take a little longer to fully load on your computer, especially sites with lots of pictures. See my blog about the Internet Archives Wayback Machine by clicking the link under "Labels" on the right.

Now, while many of the above critters are visible to the naked eye, many others will only be visible using a microscope. Here's a simple and concise article on "Selection and Use of a Microscope for Aquarists by Bob Blaho" - http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/management/Blaho_Microscope_for_Aquarists.html
