In one of my aqaurium magazines it showed species of fish that could according to the article could be housed in a 10 Gallon or smaller aquarium. With a few shell-dweller species being one of the types of fish that's compatable with that setup.

My question is that true and if not are there any fish that could be kept in such a setup?

Also has anyone had any expereince in keeping such fish?

I created this thread to make sure before I went out and bought these fish and setup.

If you Google desktop cichlids, you'll get some hits from cichlidrecipe.com which had a feature on 10 gallon shellie tanks...

But I agree, 10 gallons is absolutely the smallest I would go, although I suppose one of those 6 gallon "bookshelf" aquariums (which I believe are 24" long) would be ok if water chemistry and quality was carefully monitored.

If a 5gal is the smallest you have then a pair of Neolamprologus Multifasciatus would be the only shellie you could place in it..

I did see a very cool 10 gallon custom tank that was created just for shellies. It was only about 6-8" tall and the rest was devoted to a larger footprint. Very, very cool!
