Hey guys, I was wondering if putting an airstone into the middle of a block of aquaclear foam counts as a sponge filter. I'm trying to filter a temporary 3-5 gallon tank with a rescued betta.

you need 3 elements to make a sponge filter...
1-the sponge
2-a column of water
3-air

the bubbles from the airstone push water up the tube, in turn drawing water up from the bottom (below the airstone)

The tube is the most critical part of the sponge filter because thats where the mechanical lifting of the water takes place. Without the tube, its not gonna work.

Depending on how big the fish is, you may not need to do anything. 3 days is very short. Just an airstone for circulation and gas exchange.
