I was reading another post here on this and i had a few questions. If i fill my sump with live rock do i need a light souce on the LR to keep the bacteria alive? Because I've thrown small piece which have fallen off my LR in my sump and the nice purple algea seems to die.

Live rock is alive with life growing on it. Most marine life requires light to survive and certainly to flourish.
Live rock does not need light to be live. If there is any macro alage or corals on the rock that would be a different story but the bacteria in/on the rock does not need light.
