do i need to use this? or can i just let the water settle on it's own. the clarity isn't that bad without it so far. thanks!

If you want to use it go ahead. It just clumps the fine particles together to make them large enough that they get filtered out by your filters. Very fine particles will stay suspended for days sometimes and will pass right through filters but if it is not too cloudy then you may not need it. It will not hurt anything.
