Just what it says.

Full hoods sit ontop of the frame.

Recessed hoods sit within the frame.

Thanks that makes perfect sense now, I swear I've read the product description over a dozen times and never noticed the difference in wording.

I have another question however, would the recessed full hood fit the aqueon 5.5 gallon. It's standard aquarium sized.

I'm an engineer. Without hard data in front of me, I won't say 100%. However, a 5 gal tank isn't really known for radical shapes, so I'm guessing you should be okay

Coincidentally, recently, there was an ad for ~5 gallon tanks. The picture showed eight or nine tanks - everyone a different variation on a rectangle, but all different sizes. It was a 5g tank collectors dream and a fish breeders nightmare.

The moral, save the box and the receipt. Just in case.

Marinelands iirc have a series of little pins that can be broken off to fit different brands of tank.
